Sanford is the Seminole County seat, on the southern shore of Lake Monroe, and its business mix is unusual: a historic downtown full of independent restaurants and shops, a state college, and an international airport in the middle of town. Each of those comes with its own paperwork, and most of it can run on its own.
Doing business in Sanford
Sanford had 61,051 residents at the 2020 census. Orlando Sanford International Airport is the metro area's secondary commercial airport, and Seminole State College of Florida and the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens are here too. Downtown draws visitors with shops, restaurants, a marina and the lakefront Sanford Riverwalk.
The city's roots are agricultural. It was nicknamed the Celery City after farmers started planting celery in the 1890s, and it became the seat of the new Seminole County in 1913.
