Your Reviews Are AI Training Data Now

For twenty years, reviews had one audience: the human scanning your rating before deciding to call. Star count and recency did most of the work, because that's all a skimming human reads.

That audience just changed. When someone asks an AI engine "who's a good automation consultant near Orlando?", the engine has read your reviews — all of them, closely — and what it learned shapes whether you get named.

AI Reads Reviews Differently Than Humans Do

A human sees 4.8 stars. An AI engine sees evidence. It extracts what you did ("rebuilt our booking system", "cut our invoicing time in half"), for whom ("our dental practice", "my landscaping company"), and how it went — then uses those specifics to match you to future questions.

This has a sharp consequence: a review that says "Great company! Highly recommend!!" is five stars of nothing. It carries sentiment but no information. A review that says "They connected our intake form to our CRM and now every lead gets a text back within a minute" teaches the engine exactly which questions you're the answer to.

What This Changes About Asking for Reviews

  • Prompt for specifics, not stars. Ask clients to mention what you actually did and what changed. One concrete sentence outweighs a paragraph of enthusiasm.
  • Coverage matters. If all your reviews mention one service, engines learn you do one thing. Ask for reviews across the full range of work you want to be found for.
  • Recency is a trust signal. A steady trickle of current reviews tells engines the business is alive and still performing. A wall of praise from 2023 reads as history.
  • Replies count too. Your responses to reviews — especially critical ones — are part of the record engines read. A thoughtful reply to a complaint is public evidence of how you operate.

Own a Copy of the Evidence

We've written before about why keeping all your social proof on one platform is fragile. The AI-search era doubles that argument: testimonials on your own site, marked up with Review schema, are evidence engines can read at the source — and no platform's filter sweep can take them away.

Reviews stopped being a popularity score. They're now the primary dataset AI uses to decide what your business is. Curate the dataset.
